I would say on the pitch this was one of Gazzas worst moments in his career. Gascoigne had played his part in Englands route to the 1990 World Cup Semi-Final. The quarter-final had seen England beat Cameroon with Gazza supplying the assist for Gary Linekar to send England through. The semi-final was against West Germany. Gascoigne, having already received a yellow card during England's 10 victory over Belgium in the second round, was booked for a foul. What was to come made Gazza a very popular member of British society. Television cameras showed that he had tears in his eyes following the yellow card knowing he would miss the final if England were to get there. Salman Rushdie of the Independent after the game wrote: "Before Paul Gascoigne, did anyone ever become a national hero and a dead-cert millionaire by crying? Fabulous. Weep and the world weeps with you."
