10 Things We Learned From Doncaster Vs. Sunderland

6. Sunderland's Priority Should Be A Winger

That points leads nicely into this one. While all of the talk is about Sunderland picking up a striker or creative midfielder, I genuinely believe a winger should be the priority. Lens look outstanding on either flank, particularly the left, while Adam Johnson sat in the middle three as the more advanced option. Having those two on either side of a striker could be a great attacking trio, but if Johnson is to leave the club following his trial, we're looking at Defoe, Fletcher, Connor Wickham, or Will Buckley for the wing. And that's not good enough. Signing another winger would mean that Giaccherini and Johnson - or a new creative midfielder - could squabble over the midfield role, and would also mean that Wickham, Defoe, Fletcher, and Graham are penned into fighting for one central role. Personally, I think there are enough goals in Defoe or Wickham if they're both played in a central role. Lens will amass a decent haul, and another goalscoring winger would spread the burden. A winger should be the priority. If Johnson goes, we're screwed. If Johnson stays, healthy competition will only help us.
