10 Things We Learned From Newcastle 0-1 Mönchengladbach

4. The Formation Of Choice Looks Like Being 4-2-3-1... But Only One Of The Personnel Was Any Different To 2014-15

Aside from Georginio Wijnaldum in a No 10 role, 10 of the starting XI for Newcastle against Borussia on Saturday were regulars of the previous regimes - aside from arguably Vurnon Anita and Gabriel Obertan, though even they played pretty often under Alan Pardew and John Carver. That in itself proves that the Magpies still have a long, long way to go in the transfer market, even if Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba did appear off the bench as well. Interestingly though it seems that Steve McClaren will utilise a 4-2-3-1 formation as his system of choice going forward. Anita and Jack Colback were the double pivots on Saturday, with Wijnaldum as the No 10, Obertan and Moussa Sissoko either side of the Dutchman, and then Papiss Cisse up top. The likelihood is that Mitrovic will replace Cisse at the head of that system going forward, while Wijnaldum is able to play in any of the five midfield positions, potentially allowing one or more of Ayoze Perez, Siem de Jong and Rolando Aarons to compete for a starting berth if McClaren decides to change things around. McClaren's system may look like being settled - but now he needs to sort out how the Magpies can score more often and now concede as regularly...
