Old Trafford, 3/5/2014. Though a seventh placed Manchester United were underachieving by their standards, they were still expected to beat a Sunderland side who were showing great resolve by taking seven points from games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Cardiff. After all, Sunderland hadn't beat Manchester United in the league at Old Trafford since 1968.

A win for Sunderland would see them climb out of the relegation zone from a near-impossible situation a few weeks previous.

30 minutes into the game, Michael Carrick somehow found himself losing Sebastian Larsson, who swept the ball past David De Gea to make it 1-0. Sunderland defended like mercenaries for the next hour, and even hit the woodwork twice.

When the final whistle came, Sunderland's one shot on target had been enough to clinch victory at Old Trafford, meaning they had gone from rock bottom to three points clear of relegation in a matter of weeks. The Black Cats would go on to remain in the Premier League, in what was possibly the most remarkable escape in the division's history.
