10 Training Ground Feuds You Probably Didn't Know About

4. Roy Keane And Peter Schmeichel

One was never going to find Roy Keane doing cartwheels after the 1999 Champions League final. There wasn't even time for a quick John Terry-esque full-kit change upon the sounding of the full-time whistle, with a suspension having ruled him out of the preceding 90 minutes. Just an embarrassed smile from an Irishman, dressed in official club suit, effectively forced onto the pitch to hold aloft the trophy. The driving force behind the treble-winning side was not one for basking in the glory - especially when he didn't feel he deserved to. Perhaps, this is why he resented the antics of show-boating, cart-wheeling, crowd-posturing Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. Their frosty relationship grew a couple of icicles in the summer of 2002, following the serialisation of Roy Keane's autobiography, in which Keane labelled his former colleague 'a poser - he fancied himself in a big way and played to the crowd'. Former Red Devils' goal-poacher Andy Cole has spoken of a pre-season bust-up involving the pair, which led to the Dane turning up to breakfast the next morning sporting a pair of sunglasses. The verdict? Keane had clearly bested him.
''I've no problem with lads not speaking together and not being pals together. At United, it was well known that Teddy Sheringham didn't get on with Andy Cole. I wasn't big pals with Peter Schmeichel but when we trained and we got out on that pitch we did the business for each other.'' - Roy Keane, May 2012.
