10 Underwhelming Liverpool Signings Who Became Cult Heroes
4. Daniel Agger
Not many who frequent Anfield are Danish football enthusiasts as well, so one will have to forgive them for not having much of a clue who Daniel Agger was when he signed for the club from FC Brondby eight years ago. With Liverpool having been crowned champions of Europe in Istanbul in May 2005, they were seeking a partner for Jamie Carragher at the heart of the defence, such was Sami Hyypia's age. Hoping that Benitez would scour the continent for the likes of Lucio, Walter Samuel or even Ledley King, there was a sense of disquiet amongst Reds supporters when he brought back £6 million rated Daniel Agger instead, having given up on a pursuit for a bald-headed Serb by the name of Nemanja Vidic. While his first six months were a non-event due to injuries limiting the Dane to just four appearances, Agger silenced the nay-sayers in August 2006 in style, pinging a 35 yard bullet into the top corner against West Ham. While injuries have since gone on to plague the Danish international's career, curtailing his progress at every corner, he has still proved an integral part of the Liverpool squad over the years. Scoring the goal that ultimately took Chelsea to penalties in a 2007 Champions League semi-final shoot-out, notching in a 2-1 defeat of Manchester United in a 2012 FA Cup duel, and scoring in his final ever game for the club against Newcastle United will surely rank as highlights, but it's just a great pity that his legion of injuries restricted him to just 175 league appearances in eight years.
