10 Weirdest Football Transfers That Happened This Summer

1. Wayne Rooney To Derby County (Player/Coach)

Remember when Wayne Rooney left Manchester United to conquer the States? He left as England’s and United’s all time top scorer. His legacy in England speaks for itself, yes, he could’ve maybe done more for us as a nation in the major tournaments but this man is a living legend and should be acclaimed as such.

His time in Washington can definitely be seen as a success with worldies and his dogged spirit on show for the spoilt MLS fans (Rooney and Zlatan in the same league?!). Rooney looked to be relishing the responsibility of being the leading light in Washington and even moved his family out there to set up a life state side. Cracks start to show in January when Rooney was detained for public intoxication and swearing at Washington DC airport - nothing out of the ordinary from a player never known to be a straight cut, poster boy.

But then August rolled around and the most preposterous deal of the summer was gathering some momentum. Rooney was Derby bound and looked to be planning for his, quite vocal, desire to one day mange his beloved Manchester United. This is no doubt a coup for a club that has just suffered the loss of such a bright spark in another England legend, Mr Lampard and perhaps his compatriots success with the rams has inspired Rooney to pick 07/08 Premier League whipping boys as his stomping grounds.

Your writer quite enjoys the re-emergence of player coaches across the world and cannot wait to see Vincent Kompany and Rooney sprint on to save the day when their clubs are up against it. It’s a fantasy football managers dream. Best of luck to the scouser in the midlands, could we be looking at the Manchester United coach for 2020/21?
