"So bad that it's good" perfectly sums up this signing reveal. Purveyors of '90s Turkish Techno, Comic Sans and Blackberry-esque video quality will especially love this one.
Nowadays, football clubs have dedicated PR and social media departments, managing every aspect of the club's image. Everything is streamlined, sanitized and prepared for mass market consumption. Besiktas didn't quite get the memo on all that though. Instead, their PR department seems to have a sense of humor.
The video sees Ricardo Quaresma phoning Pepe and telling him to "Come to Besiktas." Pepe obliges and tells Alvaro Negredo to do the same. Production quality is debatable and the acting won't win any SİYAD awards, but it is very humorous.
This definitely serves as a throwback to an era when football didn't take itself too seriously. Had social media existed in the '90s, we might have seen more of these kinds of stunts. Truth be told, football would be better if it had more of this and less of the overproduced and characterless PR material they so freely distribute.
As for the players, Pepe and Negredo had typical end-of-career spells at the club. Negredo left after one season and nine goals, while Pepe managed to incite a riot in April 2018, after a poor challenge in cup a game against Fenerbache. Never change Pepe, never change.
