Nowadays Manchester City are the moneybags who can afford to waste £5 million, but in 2008 that certainly wasn't the case.

Step up Felipe Caicedo. Jetting into Manchester on the final day of the January transfer window, the Citizens gifted money to Basel for their Ecuadorian striker. Netting only eight goals at City, the striker, once labelled as 'one of South America's top talents' by Sven-Göran Eriksson, was quickly loaned out to several clubs in a bid to get him off the books.

Now 28-years-old, Caicedo is plying his trade in Spain for Espanyol.
