Unfathomable. I wish I could leave it like that, but for everyones sake I will elaborate. Celtic's only saving grace in the 99-00 season was that they teamed Barnes up with Kenny Dalglish, who was appointed Director of Football. John was an apprentice manager, basically. It was his first coaching role, and Kenny was there to guide him through his debut season. Why on Earth was this allowed to happen at such a huge club like Celtic, who's job it is every single season is to win the league? Fans got a glimpse of the misery to come when they crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Dundee United in the third league game of the season. From here on Celtic were actually quite consistent, but their first meeting with Rangers is what seemed to be the turning point in their season. Celtic lost 4-2 at Ibrox. They then went on to lose against Motherwell, and another game against the Gers ended in a 1-1 draw. The gap between the two Glasgow giants was widening and staying wide, and Barnes' Celtic were never able to claw it back as Rangers continued to pull away. Barnes hit the brick wall when his side lost to lower league Inverness in the Scottish cup, which prompted the well known "Super Cally Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious!" headline. Barnes was sacked. King Kenny took over managerial duties from his apprentice, but Celtic continued to suffer tremendously in the league, despite Dalglish winning them the League cup in Spring. The team proved to be deadly going forward alright, as shown by Mark Viduka soaring at the top of the goal charts by the end of the season, but they were dreadful at the back. Celtic finished the season 21 points adrift of Rangers in second place. An appalling season. But that's what you get for appointing such a strange, amateur managerial system. Poor decision.
As a recent university graduate and a huge supporter of Celtic FC, what better way to use my inevitable free time to write about my favourite football team? I'll cover most things that the supporters are talking about at the moment, which includes things that directly and indirectly involve the club. At times I may also stray into matters concerning English clubs.
