Where a plumber is hired to fix a leaky sink, similarly Tony Pulis is drafted in to sort out a porous defence. Under Alan Irvine West Brom seemingly couldn’t defend for toffee and looked destined to end their Premier League stay. The introduction of Pulis however, has paid dividends and he has implemented his defensive philosophy so lauded and maligned in equal measure. The signing of Jonny Evans has been pivotal to that; the former Manchester United man forming part of a cohesive back unit.

Able to play anywhere across the back four, Evans adds experience and defensive steel. Despite finishing in 14th place, the Baggies conceded the fewest (48) out of anyone in the bottom 13. Indeed, you would need to go all the way up to Southampton in 6th (41) to find a team with a better defensive record than Pulis’ men. And that's clearly a ringing endorsement of his defence.
