We get it - you’re probably sick of seeing John Stones’ name being bandied about in the media at this stage. If you’re an Everton fan, you’re probably doubly so. The 22-year-old is being touted as the next big thing to emerge from this country, Barnsley’s answer to Rio Ferdinand… apparently.

Considering the fact that Everton conceded 55 goals last season, with Stones partially to blame for a large quantity, it might seem a little bizarre to throw in an Everton defender. However, if you’ve glanced at the back pages of a newspaper even once this summer, you’ll know that the centre-half is being pursued vigorously by Pep Guardiola and will most likely be turning out for Manchester City this season.

While the touted £50 million fee seems extortionate for a player with less than 100 top-flight games to his name, luckily the price tag has a helpful decimal point inserted in Fantasy League.

But will Stones play, I hear you ask? Man City have already spent big on defenders in recent years, with Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala having arrived for a giant fee and club captain Vincent Kompany assured of his starting role. It’s a fair point, but with Stones possessing all the trademark traits of the ball-playing centre-half that Guardiola goes to bed dreaming of, you’d be hard pushed to back against him striking up a partnership with Kompany this season.

Plus, how many £50 million signings do you know that toil on the bench?
