Newcastle fans were more disappointed by the loss of Andros Townsend this summer than they were top scorer Gini Wijnaldum, which tells you all you need to know about the contrast in work ethic, industry and commitment in the two.

Townsend’s stay on Tyneside was brief, but despite being part of a relegated team, he reminded everyone that not only did he exist - following a White Hart Lane exile - but that he was worthy of an inclusion in the preliminary England squad for the Euros.

The winger bagged four goals and two assists from his 13 Newcastle appearances last season, and will look to have the same impact at Palace. Blessed with pace, skill and an eye for goal, the tenacious midfielder will look to push on and consolidate a starting berth in a fiercely-competitive midfield consisting of Jason Puncheon, Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie.
