8. Kieron Dyer

Though he is mostly remembered for fighting with his own team-mate on the pitch for Newcastle United back in 2005, Kieron Dyer was actually quite a talented footballer. So talented, in fact, that Newcastle parted with £6m for his services back in 1999 (it was pretty good money at the time).

Dyer's time on Tyneside was largely successful. He made 250 appearances for the club over eight years, and established himself as an England regular. It didn't really begin to fall apart for the central midfielder until he made the switch to West Ham in 2007. Just ten days after his debut, Dyer broke his leg in two places - fuelling speculation that his footballing career may actually be over.

It never really got better from there. Though Dyer made a recovery, he struggled to stay fit - with his hamstrings proving to be a re-occuring problem. The England international left East London in 2011, having made only 34 appearances in four seasons.

Though he had spells with both QPR and Middlesbrough in the Championship, Dyer never recaptured the form he had shown at Newcastle for so many years. His last game of professional football came in 2013, after which he retired.
