Having underwhelmed at Man City, the Greek striker's availability didn't just attract the attention of one Glasgow side, and it was Rangers who stole a march on their great rivals in the race for him. The club apparently had a fee agreed for the then 22 year old, but he instead opted to join Celtic on a six month loan deal in the hope of forcing his way back into the Greek European Championship squad that summer. Walter Smith wanted to bring Samaras in as a replacement for outgoing Daniel Cousin but the £2.5m move didn't materialise and Samaras went on to get under the club's skin as a Celtic player.
