9. Ryan Shawcross (£5.5m)
Early in his career, Ryan Shawcross may have had greater ambitions than playing for Stoke City he started out as part of Man Utds academy but the defender might yet find himself being courted by more esteemed suitors if he can keep on performing as well as he has done in recent matches. The player was the target of a late bid by Everton in the transfer window but the Merseysiders were unable to meet Stokes valuation of their captain. Shawcross made a number of appearances for Manchester United at youth level and also spent a period on loan at Royal Antwerp, but the defender found himself unable to break into the first team and was loaned to Stoke in 2007. The deal was made permanent in January 2008 and Shawcross helped the Potters secure promotion to Englands top flight. Despite often being criticised as a dirty player a 2010 tackle caused a double-fracture to Aaron Ramseys right leg and receiving more than his share of cards, Shawcross has often impressed and been the subject of much transfer window speculation.
