If ever a signing was going to make supporters scratch their heads in bewilderment, it was that of Grzegorz Rasiak from Derby County for £3 million in 2005. Spurs had been linked with some decent strikers, but none of the deals ever came to fruition. Desperate for attacking reinforcements, Martin Jol nabbed the Polish target man on deadline day. Rasiaks record for Derby had been impressive, getting 16 goals in 35 matches. He had signed for the Rams on a free transfer after a move to Siena in Serie had fallen through because the Italian club had already filled the quota of foreign players. The signing becomes all the more baffling when looking at the attacking talent Jol already had at his disposal. Jermaine Defoe and Robbie Keane would be joined by the on-loan Mido and Frederic Kanoute had been deemed surplus to requirements and was loaned to Sevilla. Nevertheless, Rasiak became a Spur. A lumbering, slow and clumsy Spur who bagged the princely total of zero goals in 8 instantly forgettable appearances. Rasiak was ushered out on loan to Southampton, later making the move permanent. A decent start at St Marys was soon undone and he soon left to continue his career of startling mediocrity.
