Another player who can take solace in being unlucky to appear in this side, John Scales was, on his day, a fine defender. An FA Cup winner with Wimbledon in 1988, Scales joined Spurs from Liverpool in 1996. Whilst at Anfield, Scales collected three England caps and was considered one of the steadiest centre backs around. Unfortunately, events at Spurs conspired to condemn Scales to a dreadful time at the club. Instability, poor form and chronic injuries meant that Scales left White Hart Lane in 2000, having made a meagre 33 league appearances in 4 years.
