11 Players Sunderland Should Never Have Sold

3. Asamoah Gyan

Asamosh Gyan was a tremendous signing, fresh from an impressive World Cup, and ready to make a name for himself on the big stage of the Premier League. He racked up a very respectable 10 goals in 33 games record for the Black Cats during his debut season. Darren Bent's departure left him as the main man, but stunningly, he opted to throw his promising career away for the mega-bucks of the UAE, with Al-Ain. He left before he'd even peaked and really has wasted the most promising years of his potentially immense career. The biggest slap in the face was that Gyan cost £13 million but was sold for £12 million (£6m loan fee, further £6m to make it permanent). He could've enjoyed a great career on Wearside, but he threw it away, and Sunderland have lacked anybody as special as him up front.
