11 Players Sunderland Should Never Have Sold

1. Stephane Sessegnon

While there were certainly points of weakness in his game, Stephane Sessegnon was immense with the ball at his feet. He could trick his way through any defence, and unlike Malbranque, he had a burst of pace. Though he was inconsistent, he was still the most creative player in the side and created so many chances as well as taking plenty himself, even though his finishing was erratic at times. But he couldn't carry the team alone, there were too many passengers, and Sessegnon couldn't bear the entire burden, though there were some who wrote him off because he couldn't put in a spectacular performance every week. He was amazingly shipped out to a Premier League rival (for the same price he was signed for) when there was no pressure to sell at all, and since then, the closest Sunderland have come to a top attacking threat is Adam Johnson - though even he drifts out of games and isn't willing to run at will like Sessegnon did. No, Sessegnon wasn't the complete package, but there's no denying he dragged us out of some tough spots, and entertained the crowd, and at the end of the day isn't that what it's all about? If you're against Sessegnon, then in the words of Steve Carrell's almighty Michael Scott: "You are a thief of joy."
