8. Ashley Young To Manchester United (£17 Million)

£17 million when he joined the Old Trafford club from Aston Villa in 2011. Young had performed very well at Villa Park - there's no denying that. He regularly racked up impressive assist tallies, scored a decent amount of goals for a winger and made it in to the Premier League Team of the Year on two occasions (2007/08 and 2008/09). However, given that he was a month away from being 26 when United signed him, it seemed as though much of his ability stemmed from his speed as a youngster and, with that starting to wane, the high fee was too much and would never be returned from a future sale. Young simply hasn't performed for Manchester United and cheating/diving seems to be a big part of his game. He lacks the true quality and technique of a footballer who demands a £17 million fee and his international showings epitomise that. He was part of England's 2014 World Cup preliminary squad, but didn't make the final cut - and rightly so. And, let's be honest - if you play for Manchester United and are English, but still can't get in to the England squad, you're not as good as you think you are (see the inclusion of Jones, Smalling and Welbeck for comparison).
