11 Transfers That Prove English Players Are Hideously Overpriced

7. Glen Johnson To Liverpool (£17.5 Million)

Media Image LtdMedia Image LtdGlen Johnson isn't a bad player per se, but £17.5 million for a right back who can't defend epitomises why English players are so overpriced. Moreover, it's reported that he was handed a £139,000 a week wage to ward off interest from his former club Chelsea when Liverpool splashed out to sign him from Portsmouth. Johnson has been England's first choice right back since 2010, having made his debut in 2003 and having previously been understudy to the likes of the legendary Gary Neville and even Luke Young, and he has since amassed 54 caps, scoring one goal. It's hard to say whether he would have been first choice in the current World Cup had Kyle Walker been fit, but Walker was injured and that made Johnson an automatic choice - his mediocre performances epitomised England's and epitomised why his price is reflective of the inflated nature of English players.
