12 Newcastle Successes (And 12 Failures) Scouted By Graham Carr

1. Luuk De Jong

Not necessarily a failure of Carr here, more a failure of Newcastle to get the best of a player who clearly has ability - although Luuk de Jong's slight frame did not suit the Premier League, which might be a reason why he struggled so much during his six-month loan spell on Tyneside. Despite scoring 59 goals in 119 games for FC Twente, De Jong struggled and managed just eight in 45 for Borussia Monchengladbach yet the Magpies still took a punt on him in January 2014. During 12 appearances, De Jong failed to find the back of the net even once - and a move to PSV Eindhoven followed, where he has discovered his scoring boots, with 26 goals in 45 games. Let's hope his brother, Siem, proves better suited to the Premier League once he recovers fully from his injuries - otherwise Carr's failures will have been compounded further...
