12 Newcastle Successes (And 12 Failures) Scouted By Graham Carr
10. James Perch
Signed: 2010 (from Nottingham Forest) Transfer Fee: £1 million Position: Defensive-Midfielder/Full-Back/Centre-Back Newcastle United Appearances: 81 (2010-13) Newcastle United Goals: 1 Current Club: Wigan Athletic A controversial addition to Carr's "successes", but Perch recovered from a horrendous start to his Magpies career in 2010 - when he became the first Premier League player ever to receive a yellow card in each of his first five top-flight outings - to become a cult hero. Affectionately known by Magpies supporters as "Perchinho", the versatile player was far better when deployed in defensive-midfield than at full-back or even centre-back. At just £1 million, Perch eventually did prove to be a valuable squad player and filled in at times when Newcastle needed him most - so Carr's scouting of a player at Nottingham Forest in the Championship proved a success on this occasion.
