12 Newcastle Successes (And 12 Failures) Scouted By Graham Carr

9. Davide Santon

Signed: 2011 (from Inter Milan) Transfer Fee: £5.3 million Position: Left-Back Newcastle United Appearances: 94 (2011-15) Newcastle United Goals: 1 Current Club: Inter Milan
Santon is now classed as an ex-Magpie having turned his Inter Milan loan deal into a permanent move and, although he was extremely inconsistent during his time on Tyneside, he can still be classified as a success. Rated highly be Jose Mourinho during his time in charge of Inter, Newcastle signed Santon for £5.3 million in August 2011 and the right-footed left-back went on to make 94 Toon appearances, scoring once. Being right-footed, Santon often struggled to defend at left-back - he also had little-to-no positional awareness - but going forward he was always a threat. Just about a successful signing by Carr, although again Santon was hardly an unknown in Italy having already won the UEFA Champions League before Newcastle acquired his services. Signing Rating: 6.5
