12 Things Man Utd Want You To Forget About Sir Alex Ferguson

2. Appointing David Moyes As His Successor

When Sir Alex called time on his illustrious managerial career in the summer of 2013, talk rapidly turned to who would replace the irreplaceable at Old Trafford. It would later transpire that man would be David Moyes, then of Everton, after Ferguson 'hand picked' his fellow Scot for the job with United's board having little or no say on the matter. It was a disaster. Moyes oversaw a calamitous campaign that saw us knocked out of every single cup competition and languish in seventh place in the league, missing out on Champions League football next season as a result. He was sacked after just 10 months as a consequence and while he deserves to shoulder some of the blame for his failings, so too does Ferguson, who left behind an ageing and weakened squad for Moyes to inherit. Ferguson did not lay the groundwork necessary for Moyes to come in and make a proper go of things, while no other business on the planet would allow a former employee hand select their replacement. It was a disastrous turn of events and one we're all desperately trying to forget about.
