Gateshead-born Andy Carroll will be returning to the North East with West Ham United, but he will not be running out on to the hallowed turf - as he so regularly did in a black-and-white shirt in the past - due to injury. Having risen up through the Magpies ranks, Carroll scored 33 goals in 91 appearances for Newcastle - including 19 during the Championship-winning season and 11 following promotion back to the Premier League - but he left hastily under a cloud when Liverpool paid a staggering £35 million for his services in January 2011. Carroll grew up supporting Newcastle and he has loved the club since he was a boy, but being booed on his return visits to St James' Park since have been in his own words "painful". There have also been claims that the powerful centre-forward has turned down the opportunity to return to the North East since, although these have never been proven.
The 6ft 4ins forward arrived at West Ham on loan during the 2012-13 season, scoring seven goals in 24 league appearances, before making the move permanent the following year. He has added another seven Premier League goals in 27 further games. Injuries have blighted Carroll's career to date, and the nine-cap England centre-forward would have had a far greater number of Premier League and international appearances - as well as goals - to his name, had he not had so many troublesome fitness problems.
