1. Sheffield United 2-1 Manchester United - 1992
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNx_HmifAm4 For the most successful club of the Premier League era, they didn't exactly start it as they meant to continue. When faced with perennial mid-table challengers Sheffield United on the opening day of the 1992/1993 season, Ferguson's men simply didn't turn up, succumbing to the clever tactics of Dave Bassett. While there were certainly top-class players within the Mancunian line-up which started at Bramall Lane, it's clear now that there was an array of deadwood which needed weeding out. Darren Ferguson, Clayton Blackmore and Andrey Kanchelskis were far from the required standard that Old Trafford demands. Nevertheless, Sheffield United dug in and pulled off a famous victory, with Brian Deane's first ever Premier League goals sandwiching a Mark Hughes strike. With Bramall Lane bouncing with utmost glee and jubiliation, Ferguson must have been seething inside, as his side had made the worst start imaginable to the newly-branded Premier League era. The only way to make up for this vapid display? Why, win the trophy 13 times of course. Which other opening day shocks deserve to be mentioned on this list?
