15 Biggest Opening Day Shocks in Premier League History
11. QPR 0-5 Swansea - 2012
A shock to see QPR lose a game in 2012? Probably not, considering how abysmal their overpaid mercenaries were for the majority of that campaign. However, lest we forget, the Hoops were riding on the crest of a wave of optimism ahead of the 11/12 season. Having stayed up the previous season by the skin of their teeth, Mark Hughes had invested in so-called 'proven quality'. However, this was a Swansea City who were still enjoying a harmonious relationship with Michael Laudrup and swept the lazy Londoners aside, with the newly-acquired Michu proving a revelation with a well-taken brace. Nathan Dyer would add two more in the second-half, and there was even time for Manchester City-bound winger Scott Sinclair to step off the bench and slap the icing on the cake with a well-taken finish. With five goals sunk past a flailing Rob Green, it's perhaps no wonder that Tony Fernandes decided to throw vast amounts of cash at Inter Milan goalie Julio Cesar. ''If you're not careful, it can be embarrassing if you're two or three behind and you're chasing the game. It was certainly that. It's unacceptable and highlights there are players who are not where they ought to be.'' - Mark Hughes, August 2012.
