The list begins with neither a player or a manager. Roberto De Fanti was brought in from Inter Milan as Director of Football to assist with transfer dealings, and also had a say in the appointment of compatriot, Paolo Di Canio, as manager. Di Canio was his first mistake, then he proceeded to sell Sunderland's two star players, Simon Mignolet and Stephane Sessegnon. He made a ludicrous transfer enquiry for then-Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, before signing 14 players, 10 of them free transfers. Jozy Altidore, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson, Andrea Dossena, Valentin Roberge, Modibo Diakite, Ondrej Celutska, and El-Hadji Ba were some direct results of the De Fanti era at the end of 2013, though none of them remain at Sunderland. He flooded Sunderland with yet another bout of farcical footballers.
