15 Worst Ever Man Utd Premier League Signings

13. Diego Forlán

To this day, Diego Forlán is still a huge favourite of the Old Trafford faithful and his name regularly rings out at the Theatre of Dreams. It€™s amazing what a few goals against fierce rivals Liverpool will do to enhance your status. After scoring 40 goals in 91 games for Argentinian side Independiente, Forlán was signed by Alex Ferguson for a fee in the region of £7 million in January 2002, with the Uruguayan choosing the Red Devils over a move to Middlesbrough. For the rest of that campaign, the striker would make 18 appearances for United and not score a single goal. Forlán€™s first goal would be a penalty in a 5-2 Champions League win against Maccabi Haifa in September 2002. Upon leaving United in 2004, Forlán€™s record in all competitions was 17 goals in 98 games. What still sees his name sung at Old Trafford on a regular basis is that he scored both goals at Anfield as United beat Liverpool 2-1 in December 2002. As such, €œHe came from Uruguay, he made the Scousers cry€ can still be heard to this day. Forlán would go on to be prolific after leaving Manchester, proving that maybe it was just a case of not being suited to the English game or of the Uruguayan maybe struggling to adapt to life in England. In his first season after leaving United, Forlán would score 25 goals in 39 games for Villarreal before later making moves to Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Internacional, and playing a key figure in the Uruguayan national team€™s success over the last decade or so as he became their most-capped player (currently with 112 appearances). Now 35 years of age, Forlán can be found playing in Japan for Cerezo Osaka.
