20 Best FIFA World Cup Goals Ever

10. Maxi Rodríguez - Uruguay Vs Mexico (2006)

Following their 6-0 thrashing of Serbia & Montenegro and the memorable piece of perfect teamwork that led to Esteban Cambiasso's goal, the 2006 vintage Argentina were playing with swaggering brilliance.

After going behind to perennial second rounders Mexico in the last 16, Argentina had fought back to level the game and go into extra time. That was when Maxi "La Fiera" Rodríguez, having already scored twice in the Serbia game, made his major World Cup contribution.

Left back Juan Pablo Sorín lofted a long looping ball into the right hand corner of the Mexico penalty area, finding Rodríguez with pinpoint accuracy. The Atlético Madrid winger chested it forward and let the ball drop before catching it with a swinging left footed volley that swung into the top left corner of the goal, sending the entire Argentina bench wild with celebrations.

This great Argentina team would, however, prove another ultimately disappointing "Golden Generation", experiencing a thoroughly England-style demise: knocked out in the quarter finals by a more efficient Germany after a penalty shoot-out.
