20 Best FIFA World Cup Goals Ever

11. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst - Netherlands Vs Uruguay (2010

The 2010 semi finals in Cape Town offered a chance for one of two World Cup greats - the Netherlands and Uruguay - to make it to their first final in decades.

Dutch captain and former Arsenal and Barcelona midfield veteran Gio Van Bronckhorst had switched to playing at left back in the latter stages of his career, but nevertheless his attacking qualities came into play 18 minutes in when he picked up the ball wide on the left.

With Van Bronckhorst a good 35 yards out and hugging the touchline, the formidable Uruguay defence clearly imagined he would want to cross the ball to goal-poaching centre forward Robin Van Persie.

Instead, Van Bronckhorst took a single touch before unleashing a rocket-powered left foot drive across the goal and into the top right corner. To his credit Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera got his fingers to it, but could do nothing against the power of Van Bronckhorst's scorcher. The Netherlands were in the lead and would go onto a 3-2 victory.

It was one of the great moments of Van Bronckhorst's career and also one of the last. The final, in which the Dutch lost to Spain, would also be his final game before retirement.
