20 Best FIFA World Cup Goals Ever
16. David Platt England Vs Belgium (1990)
England found goals hard to come by in the early stages of Italia 90. In fact, despite a strong lineup including the previous World Cup's Golden Boot winner Gary Lineker, they had progressed from the group stage only scoring twice. And now their second round match with Belgium had ended goalless after 90 minutes.
In fact, it took almost two hours for a goal to break the deadlock. When it did come, though, it was worth waiting for.
In the dying moments of the match, a foul on Paul Gascoigne in the middle of the park won England a free kick. Gazza himself took it and drifted the ball into the penalty area. David Platt (on as a late substitute) evaded his marker, waited for the ball to drop over his shoulder and spun into it to hit a powerful right-foot volley. England were through with virtually the last kick of the game.
Platt's goal in the last minute of extra time also crucially meant that England would avoid the dreaded penalty shoot-out, an event which would prove their comeuppance two rounds later.
