When Steve McClaren arrived at Derby County in 2013, Michael Keane was on loan at the club from Manchester United. The 22-year-old centre-back was struggling for fitness and returned to his parent club before moving to Blackburn Rovers and then Burnley on loan, completing a permanent transfer to the latter in January. Yet the 19-cap England Under-21 international is known to want Premier League football - something he will no longer receive at Turf Moor. Should McClaren decide he saw enough in the former Man United youth-team defender to strengthen an area of the Newcastle team that is desperately lacking in depth, then the 6ft 2in centre-back could soon receive a call from the Magpies.
