Known as the Anfield Iron, the long-serving Liverpool defender was so tough that Bill Shankly once said "Tommy Smith wasn't born, he was quarried". Known for his uncompromising defensive style, Smith gained the undoubted respect of fellow hardmen. Chopper Harris and Norman Hunter, both mentioned earlier in this piece, paid great respect to the 4-time league winner, with Hunters defensive partner at Leeds United, Jack Charlton, describing him as easily the hardest player I faced. I ran into him once and he knocked every ounce of breath out of me. Highlighting Smith as one of, if not the hardest player of his generation.
