Credit where credit is due, Celtic won the 1966 European Cup, a magnificent achievement and one the club can rightly crow about, but that competition is still open, meaning Rangers could feasibly still win it. Nowadays, that would be akin to achieving the impossible, Rangers are barely even close to winning the Scottish League Cup at the moment, nevermind the Champions League, but the fact remains that it is a trophy still available. The same cannot be said for the European Cup Winners Cup, a prize which bit the dust in 1999. Lazio were the final winners of the competition, but Glasgow Rangers can also count themselves among the champions, securing the title in 1972. That's something Celtic will never be able to say, that they have won the European Cup Winners Cup, so it's something Rangers can lord over their rivals. On that fateful night in Barcelona in 1972, Rangers made Scottish football history, defeating Dynamo Moscow 3-2 in the heat of Spain and ensuring that every single player on the pitch wearing blue was immortalised forever. Today, Rangers are far, far away from even competing in Europe, but they can look back to many memorable occasions on that grand stage.
