2019–20 UEFA Champions League Best XI

4. Memphis Depay - Lyon

Despite finishing the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season down in 7th place, Lyon were undoubtedly the surprise package of the Champions League. Having only won two of their group stage games and finishing just one point above Zenit St Petersburg all the way in fourth in Group G, Lyon hadn't kicked a ball professionally for five months when they faced off against Juventus.

The side needed a leader, and up stepped talisman Memphis. Scoring the crucial penalty that saw them edge past the Turin giants, his pace, power and confidence on the ball caused havoc for the likes of Juventus and Manchester City to have to tussle with.

Captaining the side in all of his Champions League games, Memphis hit six goals in just eight appearances for Lyon over the course of 2019/20. With just seventeen shots across his entire campaign, it was a remarkably clinical performance and one that was instrumental in helping Lyon get over the line in those crucial wins.

Adapting from a talismanic winger to a clinical forward is no easy feat, but for Memphis to be able to do that on the biggest stage in European football deserves some serious recognition.
