4 NUFC Youngsters Who Could Step In During Defensive Crisis

1. Jamie Sterry

Eyebrows were raised by Newcastle supporters when the somewhat unknown entity of €œJamie Sterry€ found his way on to the Magpies bench in recent weeks - but the defender is extremely high-rated by club staff. And, his performances recently for the Under-21s prove exactly why - as Sterry put in another impressive display against Blackburn. With Daryl Janmaat suspended, Vurnon Anita possibly needed at left-back, and Ryan Taylor seriously lacking in pace, Carver may need a replacement right-back - and Sterry could fit the bill. At 19 years of age he is raw and inexperienced - but the naivety of youth may benefit a first team who face the very-real prospect of relegation. Furthermore, this would not be a complete gamble anyway - because Sterry is extremely composed on the ball, he loves to get forward and, most importantly, he appears to have good defensive positioning, which is something Newcastle are desperate for right now. Yes it would be a risk to play Sterry, but against Blackburn he proved he was a class above the other players on display and showed he could be destined for big things. Always happy to receive the ball, Sterry had a hand in the build-up of two of Newcastle's goals and he also helped to control the defence throughout. Verdict: He looks ready for his first-team chance. Certainly not the finished article, but he is accomplished on the ball, is confident going forward and his positioning is very good. Most likely of all the youngsters to be given an opportunity - and he deserves one. For all the latest NUFC News, Views and Transfers make sure to follow WhatCultureNUFC on Twitter and Facebook.
