4 Reasons Chelsea’s Win At Man City Was So Impressive
2. Playing For Their Places
Last night it was some of Chelsea's 'fringe' men who epitomised the impressiveness of the result. Nemanja Matic was arguably Chelsea's most effective performer last night. The 25 year old Serbian has boomeranged his way back to Stamford Bridge via the stadium of light in Benfica. He was used as a makeweight in a deal to bring David Luiz to Stamford Birdge back in 2011 and despite his obvious improvement (after strong performances for Benfica in last seasons Europa League especially), doubts are always case when a player is 're-signed'. Last night dispelled any doubts, with Matic superbly breaking up play, using the ball and nullifying the juggernaut that is Yaya Toure. Last night Matic really helped his chances of securing regular first team football. Cesar Azpilicueta didn't put one foot wrong and offered a decent attacking threat when needed. It is safe to say that Azpi has not exactly been a regular fixture in the teams of Benitez & Mourinho. With Jose favourite and unquestionably fantastic player Ashley Cole sitting on the bench waiting to pounce on any mistakes, Azpi typified the work ethic instilled in the team with a great performance. Another who typified the work ethic especially was Brazilian Willian. Stolen from the noses of their London neighbours Spurs, Willian often found himself on the bench in the early parts of the season while Jose struggled to accommodate him around the three amigos. More recently Willian has had a long run in the team and deservedly so, picking up plaudits from the one and only Gary Neville. His work rate is interminable which is why Jose likes him but he also offers an attacking threat. Juan who? These three really stood up and were counted on such an important night, surely Jose won't forget that.
