Barcelona and Roma - a player who should not be playing his European football in UEFA's secondary competition. Given that Spurs have missed out on Champions League football yet again in this coming season, a player of the Belgian international's quality may need some added incentive to commit himself to the White Hart Lane club - and what better way to do that than by making him the main man? Vertonghen has obvious leadership qualities - he's vocal, he's a formidable stopper, he leads by example and he's a generally gifted footballer - and he's one of two glaringly obvious players at the club who could be offered the captain's armband next season. With Vertonghen leading Spurs, the charge for the Champions League will be augmented by the player's own demands that he plays at that level on a regular basis - and that could only be good for the club.
