5 Greatest Ever Title-Winning Premier League Sides
2. Manchester United - 1998-2001
United had bossed the Premier League during its first six seasons, winning four of them, and by the time the summer of 1998 rolled around there was a feeling that Ferguson had assembled his best team, and squad, to date. Jaap Stam, a colossus of a centre-back, and Dwight Yorke, a very fine striker, were bought in from PSV Eindhoven and Villa, respectively, and they slotted in perfectly alongside the British nucleus of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Giggs and Andy Cole, among others. It was a terrific battle with Arsenal from August right through to May, and although a 3-0 loss to the 1997/98 champions at Highbury gave Arsene Wenger's side some ascendency, United kept battling back. Yorke and Cole were a fabulous strike duo, and the midfield quartet of Beckham, Scholes, Roy Keane and Giggs was one of the finest we've seen on these shores. The title race eventually went right to the wire, with United knowing a final day victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford would secure glory. Although they went behind in the first-half, goals from Beckham and Cole turned the game on its head, and Ferguson's side were champions. They also went on to to clinch an unprecedented treble, winning the FA Cup and Champions League as well. In 1999/00 and 2000/01 United were even more ruthless in the league, winning the Premier League by 18 and 10 points, respectively. Nobody could live with them, and it meant they had become the first side to win three league titles in a row since Liverpool in the early 1980s.
