5 Moments That Defined Luis Suarez's Liverpool Career

3. His Attempt To Join Arsenal

The Uruguayan has come close to leaving the club before, and nearly joined Arsenal last summer following a bizarre bid from Arsene Wenger. The Gunners chief was desperate to sign Suarez and, when he tabled a £40 million and £1 bid for the player, thought he had activated a release clause. Suarez claimed he had been promised by Liverpool that he could leave if the club failed to qualify for the Champions League and his buy-out clause was met, but the Reds held firm and refused to sell. The fallout of the incident was messy. Suarez threatened to take Liverpool to court and even considered slapping in a transfer request to force through his move to the Gunners, but in the end he backed down from both threats and was left shame-faced as he was forced to train with the reserves and issue a grovelling apology to his teammates.
