5 Reasons Why Fabian Delph Was Right To Turn Man City Down

During the last couple of seasons, Fabian Delph has been tremendous. Playing in the heart of the Villa midfield during several consecutive relegation battles the midfielder has shone, culminating last season in an England call-up and the captaincy for his club. Unfortunately for Villa fans this has meant the prowling eye of the Premier League's top clubs have been circling. It was recently revealed that Delph has a ludicrously low release clause in his contract of around £8 million, and Manchester City were in pole position to snap up the midfielder for a bargain fee. Known to be keen to add homegrown players to the squad Delph would have been a good addition to Pellegrini's side and could certainly have excelled at the Etihad stadium. While reports of a Manchester medical spread across the internet, however, Aston Villa's official site posted a statement from the man himself:

"I'm aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight. "I'm not leaving. I'm staying at the football club and I can't wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club."

It's difficult to know exactly what prompted this change of heart (those at the club reportedly thought he had played his last game for Villa) but it was very good news for Villa fans. Some questioned the decision. Ex-Man City forward Rodney Marsh, for instance, tweeted that Delph was at a club "going nowhere" - but remaining in the Midlands could be the best for Delph and his career.
