5 Winners And 5 Losers From The Premier League Opening Weekend
4. Dejan Lovren
It's been a summer of change at Liverpool with star man Luis Suarez joining Barcelona for £75 million and manager Brendan Rodgers wasting no time bringing in fresh faces, signing no fewer than seven new players in Rickie Lambert, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren, Divock Origi and Javier Manquillo. Three of those players arrived from Southampton yet only one played for the Reds against their former side when the two teams met at Anfield Sunday afternoon - Lovren. While much has been said and written about how Liverpool can possibly cope without Suarez - who scored 31 league goals in 2013-14 to contribute to his side's incredible haul of 101 that term - eyebrows have also been raised over the Merseysider's defensive record. The Reds conceded 50 goals last season - more than any side who finished in the top five and 13 more than champions City and 23 more than third place Chelsea. But they looked to have solved those issues in Lovren. Though they conceded in their 2-1 win over the Saints, the Croatia international looked a rock at the back and was a towering presence alongside Martin Skrtel. Rodgers will hope his positive defensive performances continue as he looks to plug the leaks that ultimately cost his side the title last season.
