6 Players You Didn't Know Almost Signed For Leeds

1. Diego Maradona

This one might sound slightly unbelievable but it's true - Diego Maradona could have worn the all-white of Leeds United once upon a time. In 1987, Leeds had just missed out on an FA Cup final and promotion to England's topflight and optimism was low for those at Elland Road. But that all changed when rumours of Maradon's potential move to the Yorkshire club began. Maradona had just won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986 and was midway through his spell with Italian side Napoli when speculation surfaced that Leeds's managing director Bill Fotherby had managed to persuade Maradona's agent to enter talks over a potential - and stunning - move to Elland Road. Like all the other names on this list though, it simply didn't happen. Maradona stayed at Napoli and would later move on to Seville as his career wound down, before retiring in 1997.
