6 Things We Learned From Newcastle U21s v Blackburn

2. Peter Beardsley Was Constantly Pushing Callum Roberts

Hailed by academy coach Peter Beardsley as the €œpick of the next generation€,18-year-old Callum Roberts could be a very special player. He joined Newcastle United at the age of eight and was a stand-out performer for the majority of the game against Blackburn Rovers. Beardsley, who remained relatively quiet throughout the game, was particularly vocal when it came to Roberts - who played as an attacking-midfielder behind Ivan Toney - and it could be that the former Newcastle legend is really trying to push the youngster's game to the next level. Roberts is quick, skilful and intelligent going forward. He made his senior debut, coming on as a second-half substitute against Leicester City in €˜that€™ fateful FA Cup game in which John Carver fielded an array of non-first-team players.
