7 Biggest Conor McGregor Controversies
4. Accused Of Racist Comments Towards Floyd Mayweather
A lot can be said about the pure spectacle that was the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match. One thing that cannot be said, however, is that it lacked drama. The lead-up to the contest saw both men take their promotion skills worldwide in a four-legged international tour.
Mayweather alleged that McGregor had made racist comments prior to one of the conferences saying:
He totally disrespected black women. He called black people monkeys. Then he spoke disrespectfully to my mother and my daughter. There are certain levels you don’t stoop to and certain levels you just don’t go to. I love everybody from all walks of life
In what is starting to appear to be a pattern, McGregor chooses to trivialise scandals by making light of them and instead steers directly towards the controversy. This makes the accusations seem less serious, and has helped absolve McGregor from the controversy that might have befallen other public figures if they had done the same thing. In response to the allegations of racism he responded:
All of the media seem to be saying that I am against black people. But do they not know that I am half black? I'm half-black from the bellybutton down
However, McGregor also later elaborated more seriously on the accusations, saying that he felt that they were an attempt by Mayweather and his camp to sway his fans toward the boxer.
You can be fooled by [Mayweather] if you want to be fooled by him. You know the man’s character and his history. He’s trying to sway people in his favour and it’s a cheap move. I was trying to address something in my own little way but whatever, if he feels it’s disrespectful then he’s an idiot and f*** him as well. It’s a dirty play.
