7 Englishmen Who Probably Regretted Moving Abroad

5. David Bentley

It seems almost unfair to include a man whose career has plummeted so far that he has resigned himself to retiring from the game at 29 years of age. However, with the way his career has spun out of control over the last number of years, one would be forgiven for assuming he had forgiven a number of years ago. Cast the mind back to 2007, and David Bentley was fashioning himself as David Beckham€™s natural heir on the right of midfield for England. Having made his England debut against Israel, Spurs would quickly swoop for the supposed €˜free kick specialist€™ in a £15 million deal. What has transpired since has been nothing short of tragic: with each season his pace began to wane, no doubt struggling to carry the weight of the massive ego with him on his marauding runs. A stint in Russia during the 12/13 season was supposed to be the spark to reignite a faltering career, but injuries plagued his time in Russia as he managed just seven appearances and none of those trademark goals that had become so symptomatic of his days at Ewood Park. For a man who prides himself on his restaurant business in Spain, Bentley will feel that he probably shouldn€™t have even bothered with moving to the cold for 6 months.
