7 Most Ridiculous Spurs Rumours That Never Happened
5. Giving Up On Erik Lamela
Erik Lamela endured an extremely difficult first season at Spurs, having been signed by the White Hart Lane side for a club record fee of £30 million. The Argentinian joined for Italian side Roma with a big reputation for scoring goals and exciting fans with his skills, but Spurs' fans saw none of that as he failed to make an impact on the first team. Lamela was just 21 when he signed for Spurs and the change in culture and style of football in the Premier League was a shock to him. He played poorly and spent most of the season out with a back injury and seemed like a waste of money. However, in pre-season this year, he seemed buoyant, more comfortable with his surroundings and his team-mates and ready for action - and he has looked a different player as a result. Therefore, rumours of Spurs having given up on him in pre-season were clearly unfounded. It was never going to be an easy transition for a youngster to come and play in the Premier League and potential is the key word with Lamela. He could be great and Spurs and Daniel Levy know that. If anyone really thought Levy would splash out £30 million and give up on a player after one season, they must have been crazy.
